Collier County was created in the early 1920s from neighboring Lee County. It was named for Barron Collier, a New York City advertiser and real estate developer who had moved into Southwest Florida. The county as a total area of about 2,304.93 square miles and contains priceless natural resources deemed in need of protection. The area contains part of the Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, and all of the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge and Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Collier is the second largest county in the state of Florida.
